Uno dei monumenti piu interessanti di Viterbo e il Palazzo Papale costruito tra il 1255 e il 1267, si affaccia su piazza San Lorenzo.

Classico esempio del gotico medievale, il palazzo papale e caratterizzato dalla loggia a sette archi ogivali (aggiunta all’ultimo momento da Andrea Gatti) insieme alla scalinata, ed ospito per quasi tutto il ‘300 numerosi papi.

Nel 1268 inizio il Conclave in cui venne eletto Papa Gregorio X. Famosa e la storia secondo la quale il capitano del popolo, Raniero Gatti, esasperato dalla lentezza dei lavori del Conclave (duro 33 mesi, fino al 1271), fece scoperchiare il palazzo e limito i viveri ai cardinali riuniti, per costringerli a prendere una decisione.

Da qui venne emanata la scomunica contro Corradino di Svevia, colpevole di voler riconquistare Napoli, affidata a Carlo d’Angio da Papa Clemente IV.

Another early morning flower photo. This is a lovely old cottage flower with a strong lovely scent. The scent spreads all over the garden and it's wonderful. I couldn't live without different Dianthus! I've got about 20 plants of this as a border around a tree, all of them sown from seeds. This is an easy plant to grow yourself and if it starts to look a bit worse for wear you can just cut it down or cover the stems in soil and it will look nice again. Also easy to take shots.
